When No One Understands, God Does

When no one understands, God does—deeply, personally, and fully. Whether you’re walking through loneliness, confusion, or heartache, you are never unseen by Him. In this post, Kathie shares practical, comforting ways to turn to the Lord when no one else seems to “get it.” Through Scripture, prayer, music, and quiet moments of trust, we’re reminded that God’s understanding and nearness is more than enough.

Do you ever feel like no one understands what you’re going through? Maybe you went through a time of trials and felt discouraged as if no one knew or really understood just how much you hurt. Mom, He sees your heartache, He feels your pain, and He knows what it’s like to be misunderstood.

I have had many times like that when I felt I needed some comfort and understanding. Often, my friends would offer that extra encouragement in the form of a phone call, an e-mail, or an offer to help if needed.

However, there have been times when I felt that the Lord was the ONLY one who could truly understand. At those times, I learned to go to Him and let Him encourage and love me.

There are several things that I do when I am feeling that the Lord is the only one who understands, but here are my top 4:

1. I sing songs that bring comfort when I feel hopeless and lonely.

When I am feeling down, overwhelmed, lonely, or just worn out, I’ve learned that singing or listening to uplifting Christian songs helps more than anything else. Music speaks to my heart and ministers to my spirit.

A couple of my favorites to listen to are ‘No One Understands Like Jesus’ and ‘Does Jesus Care?’

Often, I can’t get through the songs without crying, but honestly, the tears help. There is something that is so healing about pouring out my heart to God through the lyrics, and remembering that Jesus really does know, care, and understand. He sees my hurt, my fear, my loneliness – and He cares!

Singing songs of truth helps me to feel His presence and remember that I’m not alone.

2. When no one understands, I read God’s Word and find comfort.

There are times when it seems as though no one is fully aware of the struggles I’m dealing with – not even those who are close to me. It’s at those times that I turn to God’s Word, where I always find comfort.

My favorite passage during hard times has been Psalm 139. It has meant so much to me, and has been a personal reminder that God not only sees everything, but He also knows what I’m feeling.

The Lord knows when I’m down and understands my thoughts. He is acquainted with all my ways – all I do, say, or feel. Every time I read this chapter, I am overwhelmed with an awareness of how special I am to Him and just how much He understands everything about me. It helps me to feel seen, known, and loved. I am His child, and He fully understands me.

I especially love verse 10: “Even there (wherever I am emotionally and physically) his hand will lead me and hold me.”

That verse is such a comforting truth to cling to! Whether I’m feeling down emotionally, low spiritually, or physically fatigued, He’s there to lead and hold me. Knowing His hand is holding me fills me with peace, no matter what the struggle may be.

Another verse that speaks to my heart is Psalm 94:19: ‘In the multitude of my thoughts within me, our comforts delight my soul.”

I love knowing that when my mind is full of worries or unrest, He is there to comfort me and restore my joy.

Why Trusting God Is So Important

3. I pray when life gets hard.

It seems kind of elementary to say that, but it’s something that I forget to do sometimes! I get so busy worrying about everything and trying to solve or fix things that I forget to go to God with my needs. He invites us to come to Him, yet we often neglect seeking Him in our time of need.

How do you trust God when life is hard? Going to God in prayer and leaving your problems, needs, struggles, and fears with Him will help you grow in faith, trusting Him during those hard times.

A couple of my favorites, which remind me to go to Him in prayer, are:

  • Psalm 61:2 says, “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed.”
  • Psalm 62:8 encourages us to pour out our hearts before Him. God is a refuge for us.

When my cares and problems burden me, weighing me down, I can go to Him with all those thoughts and feelings and pour them out before Him. After telling the Lord all about it, I don’t seem quite so overwhelmed with it all, and I have more peace in my heart.

4. When I’m anxious or afraid, I trust God.

Faith is trusting God, even when you don’t understand His plan. Sometimes, even those who are close to us don’t fully understand our feelings and needs. But God does, and He longs to comfort us.

Often, I go to the Lord and tell Him, “Lord, I need your love right now. Hold me in your arms and comfort me.”

Other times, I sing the song “Sheltered in the arms of God”. I love to picture Him reaching out to gently shelter me in His arms, and reassure me that I’m in His care, and everything is going to be okay.

I’m so glad that in times of difficulty and trials in my life, I have a Heavenly Father I can go to who understands my needs!

No one knows your pain better than God. He knows all your trials and circumstances, and He understands.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”.

When you feel no one understands, remember that God does! You can still be supported by those who love you, but when you feel like they don’t quite ‘get it,’ go to God and let Him comfort your heart.

He’s there to help you when no one else understands.
