How To Survive Roller Coaster Emotions

The last couple of weeks have been full of many up and down emotions for me, much like the ups and downs of a roller coaster ride. There has been much joy and laughter, mixed in with sadness and tears.

My youngest daughter got married on June 20. (joy and tears)

All eight of our kids were here for the wedding, so our house was full for several days. I LOVED having the family here, and of course was very happy to have the grandkids here for a few days. And I can’t forget to mention the two puppies that were here amidst all the fun, adding to the chaos. The house was full of noise, giggles, the sound of little feet running, laughter, and several conversations all at the same time. (joy)

Tuesday two of my sons had to leave, so it was time for the first goodbyes. It doesn’t matter how many times I have said goodbye to my kids & their families, I always get a little teary-eyed when they leave. (sadness)

Dan & Dave

Wednesday evening was very sad! Anna & Mike’s little dog Remi, ran out into the street and was hit by a car and killed. It was so  hard for the kids, but really it made all of us cry. It was a very quiet, somber evening. (tears)

Friday my oldest daughter & her family left, and Saturday we said goodbye to Mike & Anna. (more sadness)

By the time I said goodbye to the last couple leaving, I was starting to feel the FATIGUE setting in from all the emotions, excitement, and busyness.  Not only could I feel it in my body, but emotionally I was feeling exhausted as well.

How do you handle the ups and downs of emotions, as well as the fatigue that goes with it?

1. Get extra rest.

2. Listen to good music to lift and renew your spirit.

3. Focus on the good memories.

4. Slow down and focus on your top priorities, and let some of the other things go temporarily.

5. Slowly work back into your normal routine. Routine brings comfort, calm, and purpose.

Emotions are a good thing, but we must be careful to control them, rather than letting them control us. Rather than focus on the sadness, we must choose joy.

What are some of your tips for handling your emotions?
