7 Prodigal Prayers to Pray for Your Child
The parable of the prodigal son is simply a story until it becomes your child. As parents, we want nothing more than to see our babies grow into adult children who chase our Heavenly Father’s heart. And we know the fact that your child is homeschooled or goes to a Christian School, does not guarantee they will not become a prodigal. So what is a prodigal? In a nutshell, a prodigal is a child who chooses a life of sin, puts themselves in difficult situations, and behaves in ways contrary to the Word of God. However, there are instances where, after experiencing their rebellious phase, they eventually repent and return to God (and sometimes, to their home as well). Depending on the age, a prodigal child does not have to physically leave the home.
Many children have not reached the adult age and choose to live the opposite of how they are being raised by Christian parents. The Scripture passage about the prodigal son is both a spiritual and natural application of what happens when a child chooses to leave the teaching and upbringing of believing parents and live a dangerous lifestyle.
Although some ultimately choose this way of life, you as the parent can pray war room prayers declaring the Word of God and the power of the blood of Jesus over them. You and your family members can use the power of prayer to seek God’s power and pray for them to repent and return to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer for Truth (based on John 8:32)
Father God, I pray for my prodigal to know Your Truth and for them to stop seeking their own way. I pray that God’s Truth would penetrate every part of their being and cause any unrighteousness to flee. May they be changed by the Truth of God, be set free of worldly ways and anything preventing them from living a life that is pleasing to You, in Christ Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for Good Work to be Completed (based on Philippians 1:6)
Lord, I believe that You have started a good work in my prodigal. Help them to sing a new song of heart change. I know that because of this work, through your great power, my child will repent and turn from any sinful ways. Thank You for being a faithful Father. You are just and you will complete the good work You promised in my child’s life. I place this in Jesus’ hands today, Amen.
Prayer for Dislike Toward the World’s Ways (based on 1 John 2:15)
God, I know my prodigal may think that the world’s way are fun and harmless, but I pray that they would grow a distaste towards the world. Prick my child’s heart and open their eyes so they can see that the world does not have their best interests at heart but it is Your way that leads to everlasting life. In Jesus Name and His loving kindness, Amen.
Prayer for Ability to Control Sin (based on Psalm 19:13)
Father God, I pray that my child would become strong enough to resist sin, and instead of fulfilling the desires of their own flesh, they would seek forgiveness of sins and to honor and serve You. Help them to break the yokes of bondage and live a life that is good for them and glorifying to You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for a New Spirit in Your Prodigal (based Ezekiel 11:19-20)
Lord, I humbly pray and ask that You would soften my child’s heart of stone. Make his/her heart tender enough to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. Your still small voice is calling them back to You. I ask that You remove them from the miry clay and put a new spirit within them. May they use the Holy Spirit, as a guide to be obedient and walk in the ways of Your Word. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer for True Repentance (based on Acts 26:18)
God, I pray that you will grow those good seeds and help them understand true repentance. May they seek to turn from the world’s darkness to Your light. I declare and decree that my child would be released from the power of Satan so that Your power, the True Power would make manifest in their life. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Prayer to Experience a Godly Life (based on Psalm 34:8)
Lord, Your Word says to taste and see that You are good and I pray that my prodigal child would do this so they could experience the blessings of living a godly life. I pray they understand unconditional love and God’s ability to save. I know You want the best thing for my child so I lean and depend upon You to help change my prodigal’s heart, mind, and soul. In Jesus Name, Amen.
