The Blessings of Faithful Parenting

I have eight kids, and have been a mom for 37 years now. Many, many times during those years I have been discouraged, and wondered if I really would ever see the results I was hoping to see by being faithful in my parenting.

I often asked myself, or said to my husband:

  • Is this consistency even working?
  • Will I EVER see the results I’m hoping to see?
  • Are they even GETTING any of the teaching and training I’ve been trying to be so diligent with?
  • Why is it that the more faithful I am to teach Bible and character, the worse they seem to act?

One day God spoke to my heart and reminded me that it wasn’t my job to worry about seeing the results I was hoping for.  It was my job to be faithful to obey what He told me to do as a mom. He told me to faithfully point my kids to Him and His Word; to consistently teach and train them in the way they should go; to pray for them regularly; and to train them to have Godly character.

Unfortunately, I didn’t always remember that and would still have doubts and discouragement. However, I realized that those negative thoughts were coming from the devil, and he wanted me to think that my efforts were in vain. Why? Because Satan fears when parents faithfully and consistently teach their kids to love God and obey His Word.  He realizes there is power in the Word of God, and doesn’t want us to remain diligent in teaching it to our kids.

When the doubts came, I began to claim the words of  Isaiah 55:11:

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

I would remind myself that God’s Word would do what it was supposed to do in the lives of my kids; it wasn’t going to return void. I LOVE that promise! Even though I make mistakes in my parenting, and mess up often, if I am faithful to teach God’s Word to my kids, it will work in their hearts and lives.

Now that my youngest is 20 years old, and I have adult kids, I am reaping some of those blessings of faithfully parenting with God’s Word. It is such a blessing to watch my kids serve God, and see the wisdom they have gained, and the character they show in their work ethics.

If you are still in the early stages of teaching and training your kids, or are struggling with discouragement over your teens, can I encourage you to just STAY FAITHFUL? Be obedient to God’s leading in your parenting, and then trust the results to Him. The blessings WILL come!

I’m going to end this by sharing a post that I put on my Facebook page, for those of you who don’t follow my page. This story about my son is a perfect example of reaping the blessings  of faithful parenting. This story just filled my heart with joy!

My son, Dan, was at Walmart with his wife last night, getting some treats for his Sunday School class. A lady two people in front on him in the checkout line had her card declined 3 times in a row. A manager came over and told her to try the ATM after she insisted there was money in her account. After a few tries she finally came back and said she had to leave. It was clear that she was about to break down at that point. During the time she was at the ATM, Dan felt like he should pay for her stuff, but it was $70, so he froze and didn’t say anything as she left. After getting checked out he felt impressed to look in the parking lot to find the lady and offer to buy her items that were still in the cart at the front of the store. God worked it out that she was parked in the spot next to where he was parked. She was just sitting in her car crying. Dan went to her window & introduced himself, telling her he wanted to buy her stuff for her. Despite her objections, he went in, and as he paid for the items he noticed that they were all things you would buy for kids — candy, toys, etc. When he brought the bags out to her, she had quit crying and told him, “You made Easter for my kids.” (ages 2 and 7) Dan then invited her to church and told her God had given him a 50 dollar bonus this week at work so, it was obvious He wanted him to use it to help out . After telling this story, Dan said: “Even if she never visits church and we never see her again, it just felt really good to be used to be a blessing and to represent Christ. And God didn’t make it hard to see what He wanted me to do.”

  4. Kathie,
Thank you so much for this encouragement today. I am the mother of 5 children ages 11 and under and in the day to day trenches I wonder “Are they even listening”. Oh it gets hard! Thank you for redirecting my attention back to what God has called ME to do and to trust Him with the results.
