How To Have Simple And Fun Family Devotions

If you’re like most parents, you’ve struggled to come up with family devotions that are both meaningful and fun for your kids.  You want to have simple and fun family devotions. You may have tried different things, but they always seem to fall flat. Maybe you’ve even gotten discouraged because the kids never seem to show any interest.

Do you struggle with consistently having family devotions? Have you tried different things, and gotten discouraged because the kids acted up during that time? Or maybe you just don’t know what to do for devotions with different ages of kids, and you wonder how to have simple and fun family devotions.

I will admit, it can be challenging!

However, this is something that is worth fighting for and worth the effort. What better way is there to point our kids to God, than to regularly share time together around His Word, and in prayer?

How To Have Simple And Fun Family Devotions

1. Choose a time that works for your family.

2. Keep it short.

This is especially important if you have young kids, as they don’t have a long attention span. However, even the older ones will enjoy this time more if they don’t feel like it is going to last forever.

3. Keep it simple.

Probably one of the biggest reasons that folks neglect having family devotions, is because they don’t know what to do!

When your kids are young, you can simply tell them Bible stories. Act them out, and use lots of expressions to make them interesting. There are MANY Bible stories that your kids will love hearing, and then you can simply apply a thought from the story. (For example, you can tell the story of Jonah, and end with the thought about how we need to obey what God tells us to do.)

As the kids get a little older, you can read through Proverbs together. Have the kids take turns reading verses out loud to keep them involved. After each verse or group of verses, stop and talk about what they mean, and how they can apply it to their lives.

Make the Bible practical for your kids!

After Proverbs, you can choose different books of the Bible to read through. I suggest choosing ones that are more understandable for kids, as well as ones that lead to good discussion and application.

4. Keep it fun.

I’ve been impressed with how my son has family devotions with his wife and two kids, even when they had a three-year-old and a five-year-old.

  • They sing a couple of songs together.
  • I have heard them sing God is so Good, and I Have Decided to Follow Jesus.
  • To keep them involved, he will sometimes let one of them stand up and “lead” the others in the song.
  • Other times, he will use his phone and record the kids singing. This encourages them to do their best, and they love being recorded.
  • They play a quick game like Simon Says.
  • He tells a Bible story, then applies it.

As I mentioned above, you can make these very interesting by acting them out, using different voices for the characters, etc. Kids LOVE stories!

Because he makes this time fun for the kids, I have never yet heard them moan or groan when he tells them that it’s time to come in the other room for devotions. They enjoy this time and look forward to it.

Don’t make family devotions harder than you need to. Choose a time, choose the Bible passage, and keep it short, simple, and fun.

  2. I took some time to pray for YOU tonight. I appreciate your ministry. I am curious how to do Proverbs with the mature themes it has at times. I would love if you would elaborate on that in a future post perhaps.

  3. Praying for you, dear Kathie!🥰
