The number one question being asked these days is, “How do I homeschool my child?” or “How do I help my child learn at home?”

Before jumping into the five tips I want to share with you, I’d like to say that perhaps homeschooling isn’t something you imagined seeing yourself doing. And maybe you are struggling with the thought of actually doing it.

Please know – that’s okay.

There is homeschooling help, even for the school-at-home parent who was forced into it. The five tips below will not only offer some help but also relief.

Be Patient With Your Homeschooling

This is probably the single best piece of advice for homeschooling parents. Why? For starters, educating your child is now in your hands.

You are not only responsible for teaching them important concepts, but you’ll also get a dose of your child’s growth and development in other areas.

There will be moments when information is not understood or moments of pure resistance. Even still, try to remain calm and be patient. In most cases, it is just as much of a learning curve for your children as it is for you.

Have a Homeschooling Plan

With patience in mind, having a plan adds to having homeschool sanity. A good plan can bring both clarity and structure to your days… and not just for your children, but also for you as well.

As adults, we sometimes forget about the small things that could help us operate better. Having a plan can do just that.

While you are planning, keep in mind how your family operates. Also, take into consideration your family’s unique dynamic.

If you are homeschooling younger children, your plan may look looser than if you are homeschooling older children.

Go Where the Needs Lead

This is where patience meets planning. Parents have many reasons why they homeschool; however, you may find that most will admit that it is because of certain needs they want to meet for their children.

As you are planning, take into consideration any special needs that your child may need met.

Perhaps your child has a specific learning style. Go with that style, and don’t be afraid to shift if/when it changes.

If you find that your child simply cannot handle doing textbook work, find what does work and go with it.

You’ll find that in the midst of meeting your child’s needs, they’ll begin to foster a love for learning.

Take Advantage of Homeschooling Resources

Living in such a technologically advanced society actually has its perks when it comes to homeschooling. From free-resource websites to fully accredited online homeschools, you can find just about anything you need.

The key is to not hesitate in searching and using what you find.

There are also a plethora of virtual homeschool support groups. And in addition to those, many towns and cities have local homeschool groups and CO-OPs.

It may seem scary at first, but one of the best things you can do is take the resources and help that is available.

Give Yourself Grace

Yes, homeschooling can have many ups and downs. There is the planning, executing, and trying to figure it all out in the midst. Even still, don’t forget to give yourself (and your children) grace.

There is true joy to be felt in the journey of homeschooling. Having the ability to spend valuable time with your children and watching them grow and develop should be cherished.

If you feel like it is becoming stressful, overwhelming, and a mundane task, take a step back and think of the good things. It is even okay to take a break to allow yourself time to regroup.

Always keep in mind that homeschooling can be seen as a part of parenting, something that can be interwoven into your natural lifestyle. Embrace that, keep calm, and homeschool on. You can do it!
