Don’t Bother Me – I’m Busy!

One of the blessings of being a parent is that it brings out my weaknesses and turns me to God. Many times as I reflect back on my day, God speaks to me about an area in which I need to grow and change. Other times, as He speaks, it’s just to remind me of the greatness of my Heavenly Father. I’m blessed as I think of His perfect ability to meet my needs, His willingness to forgive, and His patience with me.

I remember the time that I planned a week to deep clean and organize my house. (No small task, I assure you!) As I worked that week,  I found myself becoming resentful of interruptions. Calls of “Mom!” were often met with a sharp, “WHAT?!” as if to say, “Don’t bother me – I’m busy!” Innocent requests for help were met rather grudgingly.

One night that week as I was laying in bed, I felt a sweet sense of accomplishment. However, it was dimmed with regret as the Lord reminded me of how I’d been treating my family.

Then the Lord spoke and gently reminded me that He is never too busy. He doesn’t mind being bothered! I got so excited as I thought about this! So often, as parents, we get tired of constant demands on our time, of countless questions, etc. But God always has time to listen, and loves to meet our needs.

This reminds me of  the verse in James 1:5,

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not and it shall be given him.”

A preacher once explained that “upbraideth not” means He doesn’t get tired of giving, or of us asking. Neither does he scold us for asking. What a wonderful thought! Unlike us, God is willing to give and give and give. We can keep asking for the wisdom we need, and He’ll continually supply it.

I want to be that kind of mom.  One who is willing to give, and give generously to my kids. I don’t want to be too busy for them, or get tired of their requests. I want them to see God’s love in me – a love that willingly gives.

What a blessing to have a Heavenly Father Who is there just waiting for us to ask for His help so He can willingly give it!

  1. Hello there, You have done a fantastic job.

I will certainly digg it and personally recommend to my friends.

I am confident they’ll be benefited from
    this web site.

  2. Yes, it can be VERY trying at times – especially when we are on a mission! I have to constantly remind myself that those “missions” can wait, and it’s more important to be available for my family.

  3. You hit the nail on the head here. Yes, it can be so so so so trying sometimes to have constant demands, interruptions, questions, and (for me anyway) general noise. It really can be difficult to remember that really, just stepping back (or aside) from myself is much more in line with being open, just as my Higher Power is open and willing!

  4. Leslie, I like how you compared this to the story of Mary & Martha. It’s true – choosing to make time for our family is the better part!

  5. Michelle, I can relate to that! It’s so easy to get focused on what we want to do, and get irritated with our family when they have needs. So glad for a God who is always patient!

  6. This post was very humbling to me as I remember yesterday working on a blog post and not being very nice to my family. It happens more than I would like to admit. God is ALWAYS there for us and never tires. I hope that I will be reminded of this in the future. Thank you.

  7. So wonderful when we remember, like Mary in the story of Mary and Martha, to choose the better part. Sometimes that’s sitting at the feet of Jesus. Sometimes it’s making time to love on our kids.

  8. I think ALL moms struggle with this. There’s always something calling for our time and attention, and it’s easy to get focused on a project and look at the kids as an interruption. And you are right, you will miss the times when they kids are grown – and it comes so fast!

  9. Thanks Wendy! I’d like to say that it’s something I won the victory over the first time, but it’s something that I need to remind myself of all the time.

  10. What a beautiful post and a great reminder to each of us moms! I appreciate your candid and faith-filled thoughts on this subject as it is so true. I find myself doing the same thing even at my home and feel the guilt each time it happens. Thanks for the gentle reminder to be patient and loving and remember our true priorities.

  11. I struggle with this as well. It is definitely a challenge to have and KEEP the right mindset when we are trying to tackle a big project. I remind myself often that I will miss these times when my kids are grown and out of the house, that helps me put things into perspective as well.
