8 Basics You Need To Have While Self Isolating With Kids

It’s important for you and your kids to be as prepared as possible for having to go into self-isolation. Many of us are wondering how to self-isolate with kids, how we won’t go stir crazy and what the basics are that we will need on hand when self-isolating with kids!

With this in mind, I’ve put together a list of a few things you can buy that will make it go a whole lot more smoothly for both you and your kids!

Treat Ideas During Self-Isolation

Having your whole life turned upside down as you go into self-isolation is incredibly stressful for everyone. But this is especially true for kids. That’s why it is so important for you to have little things that they love on hand like treats and their favorite foods.

Even if you can only afford to give them these treats once a week,  that is plenty to keep their spirits high. Things you might include are frozen pizzas, chocolates, and cinnamon rolls or their favorite dessert!

Grab A Few Surprises For The Kids

As your kids are at home more often now this means that they will be playing with their toys more often, which will lead to them getting bored with them faster.

Being able to go to your closet and pull out a little surprise or a new toy when the kids are bored is a fantastic feeling. A great example of this would be a new Lego set, a new doll or some of the little gifts from your local Dollar Store.

Stock Up On Batteries

Be sure that you have extra batteries for all of the kids’ toys. The batteries will inevitably die and this will introduce an all-new level of stress, especially if the toy is one you use to help your child fall asleep.

So go through their toys that make sounds, as well as flashlights, and make a list of all the types of batteries you need.

I recommend having at least enough batteries that each toy can be changed once during a time of self isolating with the kids.

Have A Few New Books On Hand

A good book will only last for so long before the inquiring young mind starts craving something new to read. Try to have some new physical books on hand for them to read. If that’s not possible then ebooks work well too.

Why not take this opportunity to build character in your kids as well!

Games For The Whole Family During Self Isolation

While having toys and books are great for those quiet times, it’s also important to have things you can all do as a family. Games are a great option. There are a ton of amazing board games out there that are fun for the whole family.

Puzzles are also a great way to keep the family doing things together.

Have Blank Paper On Hand

Make sure you have lots and lots and lots of blank paper on hand to help encourage your little artist’s imagination and to help them process their feelings.

While you may have a lot of paper on hand you will want to encourage kids to take their time and make the most out of each piece. You might run out at some point depending on how long your isolation continues.

Along with that blank paper make sure you have all the pencils, colored pencils, and paint that your kids could ever want. I recommend watercolors and avoiding markers. (unless they are the washable type)

Stock Up On Extra Coloring Books

Blank paper is great, but so are coloring books. Giving your kids the option between coloring books and blank paper is something they will greatly appreciate.

I recommend giving them just one page at a time from the book or, if you have a printer at home, using some of their blank paper to print out single coloring pages like those found on Pinterest is another great option!

Always Have A First Aid Kit On Hand While Self Isolating With Kids

Finally, it is important that you have a fully stocked first aid kit in your house that can take care of scrapes and cuts at the very least. If you have more training then, by all means, you should have a more advanced first aid kit.

While you’re self isolating with kids you don’t want to have to rely on doctors in the already heavily overburdened medical system for something minor.

Now that we’ve got the basics covered, tell me what else would you need to have when self isolating with kids?

  4. Hi Emily! How fun to have a daily tea party with your kids, as well as baking time. Great ways to bond! So glad my blog has been an encouragement & help to you!

  5. This is great! We have a “tea party” daily and it’s just simple black tea bags but the children look forward to it daily. It’s so much fun to see how much they are enjoying it and we can pretend and read poems. Also we try to bake a new dessert together every few days! So I say keep flour and sugar on hand! You are a great encouragement and have helped our family greatly!
