7 Ways to Reset Your Attitude On a Bad Day

It happens to all of us. Bad circumstances leave us with a bad attitude. It could be triggered by a child who keeps challenging us,  a broken-down car, or dealing with a grumpy person. Symptoms may be discouragement, anger, sadness, irritability, frustration, and more. Having ways to reset your attitude on a bad day at those times will help you wipe those emotions away and start over.

Here are 7 Ways to Reset Your Attitude On a Bad Day

1. Listen to good music.

When the kids were young, we always sang a Scripture song before breakfast.

One morning, my daughter was struggling with a bad attitude.

The Scripture song we sang that morning was “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God.”

A couple hours later my daughter came to me and thanked me for singing Scripture with them daily.

She went on to tell me that she’d been struggling with her attitude, and that song kept going through her head, till she just had to change it.

We also taught our children hymns, because I knew how they helped encourage my heart when I needed it!

If you need some ideas, here is a list to get you started: 25 Hymns Your Children Should Know.

Music affects your spirit, and hymns and Scripture songs will renew a right spirit (good attitude) in you.

2. Grab a Bible verse to meditate on.

Choose one that encourages you, or helps you to speak truth to yourself.

Often we have a discouraged spirit because we are believing lies.

Choose truth to help you remember that God is in control, and that He can be trusted.

Spending time in God’s Word daily is the best way to combat those lies, and get His truth into your heart and mind. Unfortunately, as busy moms, it’s often easy to push that time with Him aside due to busyness.

Here are some tips to help you with that:  A Busy Mom’s Guide To Finding  Time With God.

3. Pray

I don’t know about you, but when I’m having a bad attitude, praying isn’t usually the first thing I think of doing.

However, God cares about how you are feeling, and He cares! He already knows your thoughts, complaints, fears, anger, etc.

Go to Him and just pour it out. Tell Him everything you are feeling. Ask Him to give you His view, and to renew your spirit by His Spirit.

Praying for your kids is also a GREAT way to change your attitude!

4. Talk to a Godly friend, who can relate to what you are feeling, and be able to encourage you.

Just talking to someone who is also in the midst of the same things you are, makes you feel better.

Expressing your struggles and talking through them brings a bit of release.

More importantly, a good friend will encourage you with the truth, and  hope for your situation.

5. Go  for a walk.

There’s something about being out in the fresh air that makes you feel better.

Exercising will also work out some of the frustration you may be feeling.

While you’re walking pray or listen to good music, and you’ll increase the benefits even more!

6. Read a book.

Reading will get your mind off what is upsetting you, and take your mind elsewhere. It will help you forget about the problems you are presently dealing with while helping you to relax.

7. Get some rest,  and a snack.

When you are tired or fatigued, things always seem worse than they really are.

Difficulties seem insurmountable.

Small things seem overwhelming.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is TAKE A NAP!

It will refresh not only your body, but also your spirit.

Often fatigue is fueled by hunger, so sit down with the kids and have a snack.

You may be surprised at how that perks you up physically as well as mentally/emotionally!

Slow down, and refuel. You can’t serve your family well when you are physically exhausted.

Don’t give in to those attitudes, but purposefully choose a couple of these ways to reset your attitude and turn your day back around!

  1. An intriguing discussion is worth comment. I believe that
you ought to publish more on this topic, it might not be a taboo subject but generally people do not speak about such topics.
    To the next! Many thanks!!

  2. I read this piece of writing fully on the topic of the comparison of hottest and preceding technologies, it’s amazing
    article.

  3. I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a
blog that’s equally educative and interesting, and let me tell
you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is an issue
that not enough folks are speaking intelligently about.
I am very happy that I came across this in my search for something relating to this.

  4. On our site if you click on the store, then the MP3 tab, you can purchase Sing Scripture With the Morrissey Kids. 🙂 Our kids made it when they were young, and children enjoy listening to it because of the children’s voices.

  5. I love songs to keep me the the Word. Can you lead me to some resources for songs for a toddler?

  6. Thanks Natasha. Scripture songs always work for me when my spirit needs some help. I love the power of God’s Word.

  7. Thanks Natasha! I love what you shared that you do to help when feeling frustrated with an adult. What a great idea! Thanks for sharing it.

  8. I want to thank you for your post. I have decided that, if Scripture songs are so powerful and meaningful in managing my life, I need to teach them to my family as well. I don’t know why I never really considered it in that light before. So, thank you so much for sharing, Kathie!

  9. I agree with your daughter! When I struggle with a bad attitude a very relevant Scripture song pops into my mind and reboots me! If my attitude snuffs out any chance of “hearing” a Bible verse I go pray somewhere away from others, especially from whatever is the “cause” of my attitude. Sometimes it takes a while for my attitude reboot, but I always end up feeling relieved and at peace. You sure have it spot on with your pointers. In different situations they do make a difference. If all else fails, sleep it off😉 .

I would like to add something that helps me, especially when I feel frustrated because of someone else (an adult). I like to write a letter to the “offending” person. This helps me sort my thoughts and feelings and refocus them on what is honourable, good, just and loving. What ends up given to the person is more of a letter of encouragement or a resolve on mending the relationship (the total opposite of my initial intension) with the purpose of drawing each other closer to God.

  10. Thanks Helene! I agree – when we are tired we are more vulnerable, and likely to make poor choices.

  11. I love these sensible suggestions. It seems like managing our bodies helps our hearts to avoid sin sometimes!
