What does the Bible say about guarding your heart? Proverbs 4:23 tells us “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (issues or end results) This tells us it’s important to guard our hearts on purpose, or diligently.
Why is this so important? The heart is where we connect with God, and get to know Him in a personal way. It’s also a wrestling place, where we fight internal battles. Because the heart is the wellspring for all our motives, actions, words, and attitudes, we must guard it. The Bible warns us that our heart is deceitful, which makes it all the more important to be careful to keep it diligently. The Bible also tells us that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. I desperately want to have a clean heart, so my life will also be clean and pure before God.
God’s Word cleanses and keeps us from sin. Be sure to spend time daily reading God’s Word, and then listening for what He is saying to you.
Sin gets into our hearts through our eyes and ears. If we protect what we see and hear, we will keep our heart.
Often we let little things in, and Satan gets his foot in the door by that “little” thing. A good indicator of what’s in your heart, are the words that you speak.
“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” Matthew 12:34
Memorize and meditate on God’s Word, so it will be in your thoughts throughout the day. His Word speaks truth and meditating on His word will help us recognize the wrong thoughts we have, which often are lies.
We need to ask God to create a clean heart in us daily, as well as a right spirit, as that verse says. When my spirit is wrong, it’s because I’ve got something in my heart that shouldn’t be there.
The most important thing to remember is that we can act right on the outside and fool others, but God sees our heart. Therefore, we need to depend on Him to help us as we guard it.
The words of this song say it very well:
“Friend how would you feel if your heart were made
With a window on each side?
So that all could see not just outward charm
But detect the inward harm?
People often see you are you are outside
Jesus really knows you for He sees deep down inside;
How about your heart, is it right with God?
That’s the thing that counts today.”
How is your heart today? Be sure that you are guarding your heart diligently. Because all of the prayer and effort you put into protecting your own heart is an investment into your children as they watch how you live. So it’s important for not only you, but those who you love as well!
